Around Town and around the City walls...

History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are.
~ David C. McCullough

Russia is a product of its wonderful, tumultuous and rich history. There almost aren't words to describe the feeling one gets about Russia (espeically Pskov, Russia) after coming to understand what the people here have been through. Next year the town of Pskov will celebrate their 1,110 year of existence. Most places couldn't dream of having this amount of history under their belt! The faces of Russians tell it all without words ever being uttered. Pskov has history as early at the 8th century, with the first account on record being in 903. The population today is around 200,000 inhabitants and the walls of the protective Kremlin that surround the city, built during 13th century still stand today as an unyeilding testament to the strength of the people and the city. To learn more about Pskov check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pskov .
The picture you see below is a depiction of the famous Battle on the Ice, which is recreated every year in Pskov to celebrate the triumphs of Alexander Nevsky (saint and hero of Russia) and to keep Russian history alive. My colleague and I took part in the celebration and anniversary this year on April, 18-19 (2012). As much as I would love to tell the story there is nothing like hearing the story from the lips of a Russian enthusiast. But, if you can't do that then you can still learn more about Alexander Nevsky and his role in Russia's history by clicking here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Nevsky .
Next year the program is to be printed in English so that the conference can become international. There is also talk of creating special programs for children to participate in in hopes it will help to encourage enthusiasm and participation in continuing the tradition of celebrating and remembering Russian history and the start of the Russian federation. To all who took part in making this year's event a success and sending us the invitation I thank you! Check out the link below to view the festivities, conference photos and more!
